Asbestos Testing

asbestos insulated pipeAsbestos is the name given to a number of naturally occurring fibrous minerals with high tensile strength, the ability to be woven, and resistance to heat and most chemicals. Because of these properties, asbestos fibers have been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, including roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper and cement products, textiles, coatings, and insulation on boiler and HVAC piping and duct work.  Houses built prior to 1979 are most likely to have items, materials or parts containing asbestos.

If unsure whether or not the material contains asbestos, HomeTeam Inspection Service can conduct an asbestos test by sampling the material for you. Special education, training and certification are required to take samples and provide test results.  Make sure the company that performs any testing for you is properly credentialed to do so.

If the asbestos testing confirms whether or not you have asbestos in your home and if asbestos-containing material is becoming damaged (i.e., unraveling, frayed, breaking apart) you should immediately isolate the area (keep pets and children away from the area) and refrain from disturbing the material (either by touching it or walking on it).

Asbesots SidingIf you are planning to remodel or disturb the asbestos material in any way, contact a professional asbestos assessor to determine if the asbestos needs to be repaired, removed or encapsulated.  Do not attempt to remove asbestos yourself; special protective equipment and isolation of the area may be necessary to protect the health and well being of the inhabitants.
